Mr. Sun Xi, Assistant Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs of WFA (GPO), Meets with Venezuela's Ambassador to Singapore
Mr. Sun Xi, Assistant Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs of the World Farmers Association (Global Peasant Organization) and Founder & Secretary-General of the Global Summit on Sustainable Agriculture (GSSA), met with Her Excellency Jessica María López Piña, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the Republic of Singapore on May 20, 2025.
The two sides held in-depth discussions on the upcoming 2nd GSSA and Venezuela's agricultural development. Mr. Sun Xi extended a sincere invitation to Ambassador López Piña to attend the Summit, which she gladly accepted, pledging to actively facilitate the participation of other Caribbean and Latin American countries. She also provided a detailed overview of Venezuela's agricultural landscape and potential business opportunities, expressing a desire to strengthen cooperation with China and ASEAN in agricultural products and oil trade, particularly looking forward to future collaboration with China's Hainan Free Trade Port.
The 2nd GSSA is currently under intense preparation and is scheduled to open in Hainan, China, by the end of 2025. The first Summit was successfully held in Singapore on July 1, 2024, attracting representatives from over 40 countries worldwide, including ambassadors and senior diplomats from 39 nations. The special guest was His Excellency Mr. George Yeo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, Health, and Information and the Arts of Singapore.
During the meeting, Mr. Sun Xi emphasized GSSA’s commitment to promoting global sustainable agricultural development, hoping to facilitate international exchanges and cooperation in agricultural technology, knowledge-sharing, and innovative practices through the summit platform. He noted that the Summit aims to provide a dialogue and collaboration platform for countries to address challenges posed by global food security and climate change.
Ambassador López Piña echoed his vision and highlighted Venezuela's commitment to agricultural sustainability. She mentioned that the Venezuelan government is taking measures to enhance agricultural productivity while protecting natural resources and biodiversity. The ambassador also expressed Venezuela's expectation to share its agricultural experiences with the international community and learn from other countries' successful practices through GSSA.
The two sides also discussed potential activities during the Summit, including panel discussions, workshops, agricultural technology exhibitions, and trade fairs. Mr. Sun Xi stated that the Summit will provide an excellent opportunity for agricultural experts, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors worldwide to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build connections.
As the meeting concluded, they expressed optimism about future collaboration, looking forward to the second Summit becoming a significant milestone in advancing global sustainable agricultural development.
