On October 30, 2024, the South Africa Office of WFA (GPO) held a scholarship awards ceremony, granting scholarships to six outstanding South African university students. The initiative, launched by the association and implemented in partnership with higher education institutions including the University of South Africa, Tshwane University of Technology, and the University of Venda, aims to support promising young minds as they pursue studies vital to driving social and national progress—both at home and globally.

After nearly a year of careful planning and rigorous selection, six students from diverse academic disciplines emerged as recipients. The thorough selection process involved university nominations, faculty screenings, expert panel reviews, and final approval by the association, recognizing not only their academic excellence but also their potential to shape future impact.

Tebogo Molepo, an agriculture student at the University of Venda, expressed heartfelt thanks, noting the scholarship alleviated tuition pressures and funded crucial field research opportunities. Having spent a month studying in China, Molepo was inspired by the country’s agricultural modernization and hopes to contribute to Sino-South African collaboration in the future.

Makabongwa Khanyile, head of marketing at the University of South Africa, praised the program as a powerful demonstration of Chinese civil society’s commitment to South African higher education. Since apartheid’s end, while Black students gained greater university access, tuition costs remain a significant hurdle, he noted. The scholarships offer critical financial support and signal opportunities for deeper academic partnerships between South African and Chinese institutions.

Two female recipients from Tshwane University of Technology highlighted the award as both a validation of their efforts and a catalyst for future goals, emphasizing such recognition fuels ambition and perseverance.

In her remarks, Hu Lanying, Deputy Director of the association’s South Africa Office and President of the Jinhua Chamber of Commerce in Southern Africa, celebrated the event’s success, moved by students’ enthusiasm and aspirations. She underscored the organization’s longstanding focus on Sino-African cooperation, calling the scholarship program a tangible step toward nurturing talent and deepening bilateral ties for shared growth.

More than financial aid, these scholarships invest in tomorrow’s leaders—equipping them with tools to address global challenges and strengthen cross-border collaboration for a more connected future.
